Here's my news...

...I came down with the mother of all colds (and coughs)! It's either a case of catching a new strain which I've never encountered before or it might be because we've all been locked down for so long and not had colds and coughs. George bought me medicine...luckily he can read the box because I certainly can't! It's laid me low for a couple of days - I'm trying to shake it off before we return to Hong Kong in two days time. During that time we've had Isaac's 2nd birthday party (10 days early so that we could be here). His favourite present is definitely the kitchen, 2nd hand, £35 delivered from Tokyo - bargain! Quite coincidentally we'd brought him the toy toaster for his birthday present - very fitting. His cousins came across for the party.

Our last two days here in Japan are freezing, even a bit of snow, much like the temperatures there in UK at the moment so I'm looking forward to 15deg. in Hong Kong.

I don't know if Tokyo is the same but all through Osaka you find allotments tucked into any corner or space available. At this time of year it's mostly onions and chard or spinach type plants but this is also satsuma and strawberry time so plenty of fruit growing. At other times we've seen rice and cabbages grown in abundance on the allotments.

I love the distinctive service wires of Japan so I've included a few pictures for you to see. I'm staying indoors for the moment so Simon is doing Grandpa duty and collecting Isaac from Nursery today - Simon and Isaac have a developed a lovely friendship - we'll have to keep it going with WhatsApp video calls once we're home.

The best place for coffee is FamilyMart (nice Japanese buns too - not too sweet). We go every day, and Simon goes on his own when I'm not feeling well!!

Postscript: As I look out of our bedroom window I can see a covering of snow over the bamboo woods (bamboo keeps leaves all year round) behind George's apartment and snow on the winter trees and the ground nine floors below.

The strong medicine and some powerful ginger and milk porridge made by Namiki is leaving me feeling a lot better than I did earlier!

About this site...

I am an art teacher living and working in Dorset.  I have taught for the Adult Education Service and the University of Bath, plus some supply teaching in my local schools but now I run all my classes and courses privately. This site is intended as an addition to my teaching, primarily for any student who in the week misses a class and wants to catch up.

The lessons are also available for any one anywhere who would like some ideas on what to teach, what to learn or is just interested in seeing what we do.

I'm afraid I won't be able to answer emails asking for comments on anyone's work (other than for currently enrolled students).

I teach three weekly art classes in halls in and around Blandford in Dorset and every six weeks or so I run a Sunday workshop in a village hall on the outskirts of Blandford. I also run a vibrant five-day summer school.. Other than that I spend every available moment in my studio or drawing and painting elsewhere.

I studied for four years at The Slade School of Fine Art where I was awarded The Slade Prize on graduation. I went on to travel and study further finally doing a P.G.C.E at Exeter University with Ted Wragg as my mentor. It was a wonderful year of education which set me in good stead for my years of teaching since then.
